How can I make more money as a physio?
First, I believe it's important to acknowledge that you do want to make more money.
There are plenty of well-meaning professionals in health that have a negative association with this belief.
Money is not evil.
Money is not bad.
Money solves money problems.
What IS evil - making money by swindling others.
Making money by stealing.
It comes down to the how and the intent.
The good news is - money, especially money in abundance cannot be attained via nefarious methods in the field of health.
You might be able to make some money in the short term. But you won't be able to sustain in the long term because your patients will eventually find out you are a fraud.
So, how do I make more money?
First, become a GREAT clinician. I know this sounds like a cop-out answer, but all the wealthiest people in the world in all industries created a product/service that was outstanding. Spend time learning new skills, refining your current ones and becoming a highly sought after clinician.
Two, Learn sales and marketing skills. Once you have a great product, you need to be able to demonstrate your value to the people you serve. This is where your sales and marketing skills come in. You develop your sales skills to ask for higher rates and their commitment. You develop your marketing skills to reach more people.
Three. Choose your scaling vehicle. At some point, you will be capped in your capacity to earn because you primarily work 1 to 1. From here, you have a few options to make your hours work 1 to many.
Option 1: Scale through labour. This is when you take new physios under your wing and teach them what you know. This is the oldest form of scaling but also the most complex because humans are dynamic creatures. You might only hold onto a good employee for 2-3 years before they leave and thus the process repeats.
Option 2: Scale through code. In the age of software development, you might be able to scale through tech if you can figure out how you can code yourself to deliver to the world.
Option 3: Scale through media. You can turn what you do into an online video course and sell at scale to people who need it. The challenge here is finding what to sell, and how to market to the right people.
Option 4: Scale through engineering. Turn your years of experience into a piece of equipment or machinery that can duplicate what you do and sell it to patients.
But which one is best?
Honestly, it depends on where your interest lies.
If you've always envisioned owning a clinic and leading a team of people, then scaling through labour might be most effective.
If you have an interest in how coding works AND you have the skill (or you hire someone), then experimenting with coding might be a fun adventure for you. However remember that investment is high (time and cost), and there's a high probability it won't work until you improve it for years.
If you like to create media by speaking on camera and shooting content, then scaling through media might be for you.
And lastly, if you've always liked playing around with equipment, then engineering might be your best bet.
Regardless of what you choose, making more money as a physio or health professional IS possible. It just requires adoption of a new set of skills.
